One of the most common questions we get from parents is: “My little one’s LOL doll changes color on the collector’s poster. But it isn’t changing now. What can we do?”

There are several possibilities for why your LOL doll isn’t changing color. We’ll go through them one by one.

1. Only 1 version of your LOL doll changes color…

And you’ve got the version that doesn’t.

Most people think that LOL dolls have ALL the water surprises listed on the collector’s poster. Each doll actually only definitely has one the surprises listed. You may have had a doll or two that seems to spit and tinkle, but tinkling was probably the only guaranteed water surprise.

Here’s an example:

In Series 4 Under Wraps Eye Spy, there’s a cool Michael Jackson inspired doll named Thrilla. She’s a member of the Spooky Club, so when dipped in water, she’s supposed to turn into a zombie.

Unless…

You have the “other” Thrilla.

This doll actually has two potential water surprises. One is the fantastic color change zombie. The other is a slightly boring tinkler.

Be sure to check the collector’s poster and reinterpret your LOL doll’s water surprise.

If there is only one water surprise and you believe your LOL doll is still supposed to change color…

2. Your LOL doll changes color in warm or cold water.

Starting in Series 3 Confetti Pop, LOL dolls color change in warm or cold water. Before that, it was always cold water.

In the LOL Bigger Surprise, for example, there are 4 different dolls and 1 color changes in warm water.

  • Lil sister gets a brown shirt and boots in COLD water.
  • Brown haired big sister gets a black tuxedo jacket (she is a spy after all) and purple makeup in COLD water.
  • Blond haired big sister gets a white swimsuit in WARM water (her blue outfit should fade).
  • Pet gets pink shoes and glasses in COLD WATER.

Someone who only tried cold water would have thought they had a defective blond haired big sister. Be sure to try both cold and warm water for color changing.

Still not working? Then…

3. Your LOL doll has a manufacturer’s defect.

Just because your doll is “defective,” doesn’t mean that MGA Entertainment, the makers of LOL dolls, will give you a refund or even reply to your request (We are sure they get LOTS of them).

If you want to contact MGA, we hope you kept your receipt and barcode! Check out our instructions on how to use the barcode to return your surprise doll.

    • Hi Aadya,

The collector’s guide means there are 2 versions of the doll. One will pee and the other will cry. You have the version that only pees.
